Anna Andreyevna Gorenko (23 June [O.S. 11 June] 1889 – 5 March 1966), better known by the pen name Anna Akhmatova, was a Russian and Soviet poet, one of the most significant of the 20th century. She reappeared as a voice of Russian poetry during World War II. She was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1965 and 1966.

Akhmatova's work ranges from short lyric poems to intricately structured cycles, such as Requiem (1935–40), her tragic masterpiece about the Stalinist terror. Her style, characterised by its economy and emotional restraint, was strikingly original and distinctive to her contemporaries. The strong and clear leading female voice struck a new chord in Russian poetry. Her writing can be said to fall into two periods – the early work (1912–25) and her later work (from around 1936 until her death), divided by a decade of reduced literary output. Her work was condemned and censored by Stalinist authorities, and she is notable for choosing not to emigrate and remaining in the Soviet Union, acting as witness to the events around her. Her perennial themes include meditations on time and memory, and the difficulties of living and writing in the shadow of Stalinism.

Primary sources of information about Akhmatova's life are relatively scant, as war, revolution and the Soviet regime caused much of the written record to be destroyed. For long periods she was in official disfavour and many of those who were close to her died in the aftermath of the revolution. Akhmatova's first husband, Nikolai Gumilev, was executed by the Cheka, and her son Lev Gumilev and her common-law husband Nikolay Punin spent many years in the Gulag, where Punin died.

Amedeo Clemente Modigliani, noto anche con i soprannomi di Modì e Dedo (Livorno, 12 luglio 1884 – Parigi, 24 gennaio 1920), è stato un pittore e scultore italiano, celebre per i suoi sensuali nudi femminili e per i ritratti caratterizzati da volti stilizzati, colli affusolati e gli sguardi spesso assenti.

Si formò in Italia sostanzialmente da autodidatta, andando dalla Toscana a Venezia e passando per il Mezzogiorno, fino a quando non giunse a Parigi nel 1906. La città francese era all'epoca la capitale europea delle avanguardie artistiche e in Francia egli entrò in contatto con personaggi come Pablo Picasso, Maurice Utrillo, Max Jacob, Jacques Lipchitz, Chaïm Soutine e altri. A Parigi frequentò anche importanti scrittori e poeti, come - ad esempio - Giuseppe Ungaretti. In Francia conobbe anche la giovane pittrice Jeanne Hébuterne, destinata a divenire sua compagna di vita oltre che musa.

Nel 1909 iniziò ad avvicinarsi alla scultura ma, sebbene fosse la sua reale aspirazione artistica, dovette abbandonarla a causa delle precarie condizioni fisiche; dal 1914 si dedicò solamente alla pittura producendo una notevole quantità di dipinti dai quali, tuttavia, non ricavò alcuna ricchezza e che durante la sua breve esistenza non vennero per nulla presi in considerazione perché giudicati troppo osceni e scandalosi, riducendolo praticamente alla miseria più totale.

Artista bohémien, Modigliani non disdegnò certo il bere e l'uso di altre sostanze nocive compromettendo la sua instabile salute fisica già minata dalla tubercolosi, che infatti lo portò alla morte all'età di soli trentacinque anni. È sepolto nel cimitero parigino di Père-Lachaise insieme con la sua compagna Jeanne, la quale, incinta di otto mesi del loro secondo figlio, si suicidò due giorni dopo la sua morte.

Nikolay Nikolayevich Punin (Russian: Никола́й Никола́евич Пу́нин; November 28 [O.S. December 11] 1888 – August 21, 1953) was a Russian art scholar and writer. He edited several magazines, such as Izobrazitelnoye Iskusstvo among others, and was also co-founder of the Department of Iconography in the State Russian Museum. Punin was a lifelong friend and common-law husband of poet Anna Akhmatova who is famous for writing the poem Requiem.
