Chi uscì con Eleanor Marx?

Jenny Julia Eleanor Marx, nota famigliarmente come Tussy e citata in italiano anche come Eleonora Marx (Soho, 16 gennaio 1855 – Lewisham, 31 marzo 1898), è stata un'attivista, traduttrice e sindacalista britannica. Figlia più giovane di Karl Marx e Jenny von Westphalen, fu lei stessa una militante socialista; a volte lavorò come redattrice letteraria e fu attiva nel campo dei diritti delle donne. Nel corso della giovinezza intravide per sé stessa una carriera teatrale, prima di dedicarsi alla pubblicazione degli scritti paterni.

Fidanzata inizialmente con Prosper-Olivier Lissagaray, di 20 anni più vecchio, dopo la rottura del rapporto con questi, avvenuta nel 1882, divenne la compagna di Edward Aveling (un importante socialista inglese dell'epoca), già sposato, con cui instaurò una relazione di "amore libero", e di cui adottò il cognome divenendo Eleanor Aveling. Assieme si dedicarono alla lotta sindacale; partecipò alla fondazione della Seconda Internazionale nel 1889 e a quella del Partito Laburista Indipendente nel 1893.

La sua vita di coppia rimase però difficoltosa; Aveling, anche per ragioni finanziarie, ebbe una reputazione sempre meno buona all'interno dei circoli socialisti. Nel marzo del 1898, dopo aver scoperto che il compagno appena rimasto vedovo si era sposato segretamente con una giovane attrice nel giugno dell'anno precedente, si suicidò bevendo una fiala di veleno. Aveva 43 anni.

Prosper-Olivier Lissagaray (Tolosa, 24 novembre 1838 – Parigi, 25 gennaio 1901) è stato un letterato, giornalista e politico francese. Socialista, è noto per la sua opera storica sulla Comune di Parigi.

Edward Bibbins Aveling (29 November 1849 – 2 August 1898) was an English comparative anatomist and popular spokesman for Darwinian evolution, atheism, and socialism. He was also a journalist and editor, playwright and actor, short story writer and poet. Aveling was the author of scientific works and numerous literary and political pamphlets that were published by The Freethought Publishing Company; he is perhaps best known for his popular work The Student's Darwin (1881); he also translated the first volume of Karl Marx's Das Kapital and Friedrich Engels' Socialism: Utopian and Scientific.

Aveling was elected vice-president of the National Secular Society in 1880–84, and was a member of the Democratic Federation and then a member of the executive council of the Social Democratic Federation, and was also a founding member of the Socialist League and the Independent Labour Party. During the imprisonment of George William Foote for blasphemy, he was interim editor for The Freethinker and Progress. A Monthly Magazine of Advanced Thought. With William Morris, he was the sub-editor of Commonweal. He was an organizer of the mass movement of the unskilled workers and the unemployed in the late 1880s unto the early 1890s, and a delegate to the International Socialist Workers' Congress of 1889. For fifteen years, he was the partner of Eleanor Marx, the youngest daughter of Karl Marx, and co-authored many works with her.
